Adapalene

How and why it works

Adapalene is a third-generation retinoid that binds to specific retinoic acid receptors (RAR-β and RAR-γ) in the skin. It normalizes the differentiation of follicular epithelial cells, preventing the formation of microcomedones—the precursors to all acne lesions. Unlike older retinoids, adapalene has inherent anti-inflammatory properties, reducing redness and swelling associated with inflammatory acne. It also promotes cell turnover in the epidermis, helping fade post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and improving overall skin texture.

How to use

Apply a pea-sized amount to clean, dry skin once daily in the evening. Avoid the eye area, lips, and mucous membranes. Start with every other night for the first 2 weeks to build tolerance, then increase to nightly use. Always use a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen during the day, as retinoids increase photosensitivity. Expect an adjustment period of 4–8 weeks; results typically become visible at 8–12 weeks.

Benzoyl peroxide (use in the morning while adapalene is applied at night to target acne from multiple angles without irritation), hyaluronic acid serums (to counteract dryness), niacinamide (strengthens the skin barrier and reduces inflammation), and a gentle ceramide-based moisturizer. Avoid combining with other retinoids, AHAs/BHAs, or vitamin C in the same routine step to minimize irritation.
